A high-quality pond underlayment is a must-have when building a pond or water feature. It acts as a protective barrier between your EDPM Fishsafe liner and the ground, preventing sharp rocks, roots, and other debris from causing damage over time.
Aquascape Heavy Duty Underlay 250 GSM Roll is designed to give your pond the long-lasting protection it needs. Made from durable polypropylene geotextile, this underlayment is tough yet lightweight, making installation quick and hassle-free. Its non-slippery surface ensures it stays in place while you lay down the liner, reducing the risk of shifting or creases.
One of the key benefits of this underlay is its breathability. Unlike plastic sheeting or inferior materials, it allows gases to escape, preventing unwanted air pockets from forming beneath the liner. This feature helps maintain the integrity of your pond’s foundation and ensures a smooth, professional finish.
There are cheaper underlayments on the market but these will be much thinner and so often a soft material that will push apart from a point source of pressure – like a stone, making them useless. This 250GSM woven fabric becomes a firm mesh or lattice, creating structural support under your pond that becomes more solid the more pressure that is pushed against it. Being polypropylene, it will last as long as your liner, protecting your pond for the entirety of its life, not rotting away leaving your liner exposed.
When selecting your underlayment, you will need enough to cover the entire underside of your liner to protect against stones and other sharp objects that may shift over time. If you are adding rocks and gravel inside your pond, we recommend placing an extra layer of underlay on top of the liner to create a protective sandwich. This affordable insurance prevents punctures and makes future maintenance worry-free when moving inside your pond.

Use a sharp utility knife with a fresh blade, we like using hooked blades, to cut the fleece. Have plenty of spares and replace as needed for a safe, clean cut. Alternatively, heavy duty scissors work well too.
